Main Uses
Pharmaceutical and Sanitary Fields:
Disinfection and Bacteriostasis: 3% boric acid solution is used for rinsing skin and mucous membranes (e.g., conjunctivitis, oral ulcers), and ointments can treat mild burns and eczema;
Preservative: Formerly used for food preservation (mostly banned now due to toxicity restrictions), currently mainly used in cosmetics and toothpaste.
Industrial Applications:
Glass and Ceramics: Used as a flux to lower the melting point of glass, for manufacturing heat-resistant glass (e.g., borosilicate glass), optical glass, and ceramic glazes;
Flame Retardant: Added to cellulose and plastics, it decomposes upon heating to generate a B₂O₃ coating to inhibit combustion;
Electroplating: Used as a pH buffer in electroplating solutions to improve coating uniformity.
